Excuse the text, It's an intgeral part of the visual composition. In a month that i discovered how much I'm falling behind as a traditional artist I had to do a WaPI poster that talks about reaching your pinnacle as an individual.

Go figure.

I used blender to do the faces on the mantra behind the character who was drawn in Art Rage and completed in Photoshop. Gimp sucks largely because of the interface so I am putting it on the back burner.

Brain Drain

These days it's frequent to hear lamentations of how much manpower resource Africa is losing to Europe, the US and Australia. So WaPI had a theme to deal specifically with these issues. We even had brain gain in the form of Blak Twang (originally Nigerian and in Kenya for the first time) perform.

This was an I did to test how much knowledge I had acquired in Blender. I have been playing with it since January and even bought the manual.

Detox

This is the poster for the next WAPI event at the British Council in Nairobi. The theme is Detox: Kicking the habit. I chose to do this image because I think that to kick a habit you need to kill a part of yourself. Anyone who has watched Fight Club would understand. Not to say that I condone any form of suicidal activity, I'm just speaking metaphorically.

I used painter on the lady's face and body and then got impatient with pushing paint around, so I used a Photoshop filter to give it a cut-out/ ink-ish polished look. The rest of the objects, save for the syringe, were done in XSI and composited in Photoshop. The syringe was a photograph.

The Slave Driver

I created this image for the WAPI poster for August 2007 event.
The theme is modern day slavery. I thought about exploring sex slavery in a clever way using an art-noveau-ish style but shied away from it. I felt that it would take away from the theme a little.

So I focussed on the perpetrator rather than the victim. Some CEO type individual with a whip in hand. I wanted to put a profit chart in the back but that would have taken away from the design.

PHOTOSHOP and COREL PAINTER were used.
The theme is HAKI which means JUSTICE and I wanted to imply within the image the choice most Kenyans must make between using the formal court system and using other means to resolve disputes.

I made a pencil sketch and painted over it in Photoshop. The scales of justice are a 3d element done in XSI.

This was probably my most ambitious poster for the WaPI series of posters up until this point. I wanted to test my 3d knowledge fully in a production environment by modeling a commercial transport minivan (a.k.a. matatu in these parts.) I fell short of my initial concept that was supposed to be a photo-real rendition because I used a detailed side reference from a press ad but made up the front.

Consequently I had to mess around with the image in Photoshop just to make it work for the audience. Overall I feel the concept works for the context in which it will be used as promotional material.

November’s poster will be designed by someone else, but I will be back with a bang in December or January.
I consider it a study. I wanted to do an image that was like the poster but pushed the theme a little bit further, something that would have a little bit more visual impact.
